    Maintenance

    Inspecting the Hitch & Coupler

You must be absolutely certain your trailer will remain attached to your tow vehicle while moving, so keeping your hitch and coupler in good shape is key. Examine your entire hitching system carefully for any signs of rust, corrosion, cracks, or other damage. Test the coupler’s latching mechanism to ensure it is neither too easy nor too difficult to operate. Ensure the coupler is not loose-fitting, as a loose coupler means a loose connection between the trailer and the tow vehicle. Remember, the coupler is not rated for significant upward force. Loads positioned behind the axles can create upward pressure on the coupler, potentially causing damage or failure, therefore, proper load placement is essential. Don’t forget the safety chains! In an emergency, they can be the one thing keeping your trailer attached to you. Inspect the links carefully for wear or rust.

    • Inspect the coupler and hitch components for signs of wear, damage, or corrosion before each tow.
    • While towing, inspect your coupler and hitch components every 100 hours or 50 miles
    • Verify you are using the correct size hitch ball and that all components meet the required weight ratings
    • Ensure the coupler fully engages and securely latches onto the ball, always visually confirm it is properly locked
    • Keep the coupler clean and free of dirt or debris that could interfere with proper operation
    • Follow regular maintenance practices to keep moving parts functioning correctly
    • Do not tow if the coupler is damaged or does not latch properly, repair or replace it first
